At Maastricht UMC+ the Forensic Radiology team includes forensic (pediatric) radiologists, consultants and technicians. Medical imaging technicians are responsible for acquiring images. Forensic radiologists and consultants are tasked with interpretation and reporting of these images. Forensic radiology is primarily used to assist in medicolegal investigations of crime victims. In situations when it is unclear whether a crime has been committed, forensic radiology is also used to help establish the cause of death.

The Maastricht UMC+ Forensic Radiology team focuses on:
- Forensic radiological examination of deceased persons
- Forensic radiological examination of living persons
- Forensic (re)assessment of existing radiological data in medicolegal proceedings
- Identification and Disaster Victim Identification (DVI)
- Unknown package identification/screening
- Writing Expert Reports on:
- Forensic radiological examination of deceased persons, including answers to investigative questions such as cause of death, (3D-)visualisation of injuries and plotting of stab/shot trajectories.
- Forensic radiological examination of living persons, including details such as force mechanism, projectile measurements and injury risk assessment.
- (Re)assessment of clinical or postmortem data (from other hospitals), such as viewing existing clinical data from a ‘forensic’ perspective, or correlating clinical data to a postmortem scan.

There are currently three forensic scanning locations in the Netherlands, providing national coverage: Maastricht UMC+, Meander Medical Center in Amersfoort, and Reinier de Graaf Gasthuis in Delft. Interpretation and reporting of all images, as well as any imaging reassessment, takes place at Maastricht UMC+.

The Maastricht UMC+ Forensic Radiology team is in close collaboration with forensic professionals in the Netherlands. The Public Prosecution Service (OM) is the primary client. Always remaining an independent party, Forensic Radiology works with the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI), Eurofins - The Maastricht Forensic Institute (TMFI), and other forensic specialists. Forensic radiology expertise is also called upon to aid in counter-investigations by the National Expertise Centre for Child Abuse (LECK). Collaboration and consultation with various specialized police teams take place, including with investigation teams (including traffic accidents), forensic physicians and forensic pathologists. We also collaborate with several partners in scientific research .
Forensic Radiology Maastricht UMC+ is registered with the Dutch National Expertise Agency (Landelijke Deskundigheidsmakelaar, LDM), affiliated with the Dutch Association for Radiology (NVvR), the International Society of Forensic Radiology (ISFRI), and the International Academy of Legal Medicine (IALM), and is part of the accreditation committee of the NRGD.
