  The department of pathology teaches students of the faculties of medicine and health sciences of the University of Maastricht, the faculty of biomedical technology (a cooperation between the University of Maastricht and the Technical University of Eindhoven) and the school of life sciences of the Transnational University of Limburg (a cooperation between the University of Maastricht and the Limburg University Center in Diepenbeek, Belgium).

  Faculty of Medicine

  Education provided by the department of pathology for the faculty of medicine includes coordinating courses, giving lectures, providing practical training in skills labs, and leading tutorial groups.  Students are evaluated based on practical skills tests and course examinations that are given by the department.  The faculty of medicine offers the option of taking elective courses, some of which are offered by the department of pathology.  Each year, the curriculum department of the faculty of medicine (Bureau Onderwijs van de FdG), provides an overview and schedule of each program offered.  The programs are coordinated and organized by the department itself and are assessed and approved by the so-called “Projectgroep Keuzeonderwijs” (the group that organizes elective courses).  Information about programs offered are available to students at the information counter of the curriculum department of the faculty of medicine.  Students can apply for an elective program by filling out a specific application form for elective programs, which must be handed in 6 weeks prior to the start of the program. 

  Faculty of Health Sciences

  Education provided by the department of pathology for the faculty of health sciences is concentrated on environmental health sciences and biological health sciences.  Courses, lectures and skills labs are offered for both of these fields.

• Co-assistentschap

  Wij bieden ruime gelegenheid voor een co-assistentschap pathologie. Dit is zowel interessant als je een specialisatie in klinische pathologie overweegt als voor co-assistenten die hun pathofysiologische en histologische kennis willen versterken. 

  Tijdens het assistentschap draai je mee op de afdeling en maak je kennis met alle aspecten van de pathologie. Je leert de procesgang van de preparaten van OK tot de uitslagen die besproken worden in de diverse MDOs. Je integreert macroscopische, microscopische en moleculaire gegevens. Op basis hiervan bepaal je diagnose en prognose van de patiënt. Zo bouw je een solide fundament op van pathofysiologische kennis waarop je kunt voortbouwen in een vervolgopleiding. De ervaring leert dat een co-assistentschap pathologie altijd een waardevolle aanvulling is op je studie, onafhankelijk van je uiteindelijke vakkeuze.

  Dagelijks werk co-assistent pathologie

  Tijdens je co-schap draai je mee op de afdeling en zul je meelopen met de patholoog. Je dagelijks werk tijdens het assistentschap is: macroscopisch en microscopisch onderzoek verrichten, deelnemen aan klinische besprekingen, assisteren bij obducties. Je werkt op het niveau van een beginnend arts-assistent met daarbij uitgebreide en zeer laagdrempelige supervisie.

• Internships

  Internships

  Students of the Faculties of Medicine and Health Sciences, as well as students enrolled in other university programs in the Netherlands or foreign students, have the opportunity to carry out their internship at the department of pathology.  Students are assigned to a project that is already up and running and may complete their internship in 3 months to 1 year.  During their internship, students learn various modern research techniques that are used within the department.  Once the practical part of their work is complete, students are required to write a thesis about their research.  

  Short Clinical Internship

  Graduates of the Faculty of Medicine may enroll in a two-week internship at the department to become familiar with the specialty of pathology.  The internship is evaluated by the department of pathology itself and the results are presented on a yearly basis by the education coordinator of the department. 

  Internship programs for students of laboratory technician schools 

  Students of laboratory technician schools have the opportunity to complete their practical training within the diagnostics and research units of the department of pathology.  Students are assigned to a particular unit within the department depending on their area of specialty.  With respect to diagnostics, students receive training and experience in cytology and histology, and within the research unit, students receive training in various laboratory techniques.  Students complete their assignments under the supervision of the laboratory technical school, the project supervisor and research supervisor of the department of pathology. 

  Elective programs

  Students have the opportunity to design their own program, however the subject and duration of the program must first be approved by the department.
