Gianluca Galazzo is a bioinformatician specialising in statistical analysis for microbiome research. He is part of MosaBiome, a unit withing the Department of Medical Microbiology and Infection Prevention at Maastricht UMC+. MosaBiome provides microbiome research services, including DNA sequencing, bioinformatics, biostatistical analysis, and data visualisation. Gianluca’s work focuses on developing and executing robust and reproducible biostatistical analysis plans tailored for microbiome research projects. His expertise includes R and R Markdown programming, multivariate statistical analysis for cross-sectional and longitudinal studies in metagenomics and metabolomics data analysis. He also specialises in data visualisation and modelling, ensuring transparency, reproducibility, and methodological rigour in microbiome research.

Over
Gianluca Galazzo studied Molecular Biotechnology for his bachelor’s degree and Bioinformatics for his master’s degree at the University of Bologna. He specialised in microbiome data analysis, focusing on both amplicon sequencing and shotgun metagenomics. In 2016, he began his PhD research at the Department of Medical Microbiology at Maastricht UMC+, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. John Penders. His dissertation, titled "Intestinal microbiota assembly and dynamics in health and disease: a focus on longitudinal data analysis", led to the completion of his PhD in 2021.
